Our beginnings

An answer to an invitation

Our Religious Family is present in India since 1992. The Congregation, represented by two sisters of two different continents (One Italian and one Canadian) started the first community at Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, as an answer to the invitation of Bishop Peter Remigius.

The priorities and choices of ministries of the Congregation in India, besides being in line with our charism and the needs of the times and place, have aimed at:

Forming the future SCSM in a climate conducive to the spiritual journey and where the persons can grow in freedom and responsibility.
Being present in villages, sharing in the simple life of the people and trying to improve their life conditions at all levels
Participating to the educational ministries of the various diocese
Assisting creatively in the pastoral ministries
Evangelizing
Working in collaboration with the dioceses, congregations, lay people

Our presence, place by place

Kumbakonam

In 1995, at Kumbakonam, the first convent was built which is considered as the Mother House of the SCSM in India. It is also a formation house for various stages of formation.

It houses the novitiate and also a community of teaching sisters who work in the Congregation’s school built in a nearby disadvantaged area.

On the school campus there is also a speech therapy centre. There, children with various language and mental disabilities are taught to communicate and to improve their concentration and motility. A good number of the Center’s children are enabled to get into the regular classrooms of our school.

Besides the educational and formation ministries, every Sunday our sisters take care of the pastoral animation and cathequism in differents villages.

Alambadi Mettur

The convent opened in May 2000 in order to assist in the pastoral ministry of one parish and in the educational ministry of a nearby diocesan school. The sisters also take care of preschool children.

Trichy

There are two houses in Trichy. One, Maria Angelica Home is dedicated to the initial formation of the future Sisters of Charity of St. Mary and to youth animation. It is also a Study House.

The other one, Angelica Grace Home is a star residence for senior citizens.

Govindanallur

In this small village near Jeyakondam, Tamil Nadu the sisters give pastoral and educational care to the people.

Eraiyur

The congregation has built a hostel for girls and and one sister teaches at Eraiyur’s diocesan school. The majority of the girls are orphan, semi-orphan or come from poor broken families. Some girls also come from the gypsy community. Almost all of the children of the hostel (from 1st to 8th standard) come from morally unhealthy background and have known abuse, violence and negligence from their parents or guardians.

Azhagusirai

In collaboration with the Claretians of Chennai province, our congregation care for the abandoned infants and elderly people of Claretian Mercy Home, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Nallajerla

The sisters work at Nallajerla, West Godhavari, Andhra Pradesh in the pastoral and educational ministries of the area, in collaboration with the Claretians.
